During the 1870s, the Pinal Apache Indians conducted raids against white farmers and friendly Pima Indians in the region. In response, the Arizona Volunteers tracked the Apaches to the top of some rugged, towering cliffs. At daybreak, the Volunteers attacked, killing more than half of the 75 Apaches. Rather than surrendering to their attackers, the remaining Apaches chose to leap over the cliff's edge to their deaths.

It is said that the Apache squaws' immense sorrow over this tragedy led the Great Father to embed their tears into black stones at the foot of the cliff. These black obsidian stones, when held up to the light, reveal a translucent tear-like appearance. Obsidian is a natural glass formed when molten lava, containing a high percentage of silica, erupted from a volcano and cooled quickly on the Earth's surface. The stones are opaque when reflecting light but translucent when held directly towards a light source.

The specimen you will receive is an Apache Tear, measuring approximately 1 inch in diameter and weighing 1.2 ounces. Each rock is unique, varying in shape, size, and appearance, as no two rocks are exactly alike. The item comes with an informative card about the stone's origin and significance.

The Apache Tear originates from North America, where it serves as a poignant reminder of the tragic events that unfolded during the Pinal Apache's conflict with the Arizona Volunteers. These stones, imbued with the sorrow of the Apache squaws, continue to captivate and intrigue those who hold them, revealing the translucent tears that bear witness to a dark chapter in the region's history.
